The United States of America dropped the first ever nuclear weapon on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, then three days later a second bomb was dropped on the city of Nagasaki. The immediate death toll is estimated to have been well over 100,000 people, but many more died in the years that followed from radiation-related illnesses.
The attack has caused a lot of controversy over the years as to whether it was right for the US to deploy such devastating damage some believe it was justified, and others do not.
